Should I go for it?!
www.adamlerner.net I got a very interesting email from Matt, a photographer at a crossroads wondering how to go about moving his photography career to the next level. I get these types of emails often, but what struck me about Matt’s email were some of the questions he’s considering that got me a bit concerned. There is no magic formula for success, however if you have a passion for photography and work hard at it and stick with it, hopefully it will pay off. In the meantime, take care of yourself and do what you can to avoid getting into debt and or damaging your credit rating. Please subscribe and leave your questions and comments below.

Adam, the best video I have ever watched in photography channel Very encouraging as well. a lot of people want “over-night success” they want instant result and thinking owning or having professional gear is all they need in becoming a photographer and forgetting other side of running a photography business.

Hey Adam, i don’t usually ask questions here because I feel like they easily go unnoticed. But do you think there is a great added value in a photography degree? Do you feel it is necessary to become a professional photographer? Or do you think being self taught comes with a greater potential to be innovative/creative? Hope you see this!

Hey nice dude you make me want to keep up

Another solid video. Talking openly like this IMHO is one of your greatest strengths. I just subscribed. Keep up the good work, all the best!

Well said, +1 from me on that

Really great vid, thank you adam.

Terrific video! I appreciate that you were able to present the facts without being condescending or insulting, which is how other people appear when doing this kind of video. I’m a newbie at photography for more than a year. Since I only do it as a hobby I’m taking my time to build a good foundation on exposures, metering, composition, post work etc.. Although sometimes tempted, I try to avoid being too hooked on gear. I think if ever I just go out and buy the best gear without actually deservi

People should read the Zack Arias story.. it’s exactly what Adam is talking about.

This was really good. Lots and lots of info. You just tell it as it is. Great job! And most of all, thank you for sharing such precious information!

We need more videos of this…

And. Talking about TERRY RICHARDSON. I think he has been rejected more times than any other photographer. There is a video on youtube (3 parts) taking about his beginings as a photographer.

* An he does have a twitter, facebook, etc account.

Wise words Adam, wise words. Im 17, I have a Nikon D3100, a kit lens, a 50mm 1.8 and a Lomography analog camera. I’m getting a bit noticed and already have some jobs for the next two weeks. Tip: get to know a lot of people, knowing people is you best chance to get into the business. Also, never stop learning, the internet is you best friend ;)

AdamLernerPhoto

thank you!

AdamLernerPhoto

Great point. I think because just about anyone can go out and buy pro-gear and editing software, build a website etc, the barrier for entry has been dropped.

AdamLernerPhoto

well said and i think it’s a balance of both. being solid with your craft as well as knowing how to manage the backend and business side of things.

Congrats Adam , Great story great speach.

This realy made me think about the career in photo. Can you tell me if you have ever an inspiration fatigue. And how you find new sources of inspiration?
Thanks for your wise words.
This video rise your level in my eyes by 2 points. I hardly wait similar subjects fro you.

I wish you more video like this.

Adam, this is an awesome video. What you say is so true. Full time photography is not for every photographer, and as you say, that’s ok. You are right, it’s much more a business than the art of photography.

bassmanTV

720p-1080p-original?? did you shoot this at 2K or something??

TheHipsterguy

i am a canon user so i will be a little biased.
if you go for canon i would recommend a 2nd hand 550d or a 600d. i personally don’t see the point in the 60d for video. with that money you have saved go for the 35mm f/2 and the 50mm f/1.8
these lenses will provide plenty of low light performance as well as being sharp.
as for mic’s and other stuff, i know nothing really about that aspect.

Bluebeltonproduction

Hi Adam,

I am looking to grab a dslr primarily for video and secondary photographic capability. Stuck between the 60D and the Nikon D7000. I have access to two canon lenses now…one rebel kit lens EFS (18-55) and an EFS 55-200. I have approximately 2200 for my budget (shotgun mic, body, hopefully a lens or two). I feel like the D7000 may be the better investment but I don’t have anything invested in lenses. Thoughts?

Sorry, can’t watch any more now that I’ve spotted the dog peering out at me from behind that cylindrical book stop (or cup?) thing by the telephone.
Can’t concentrate… Good vid Adam, Matt, don’t do it. Bye.
