As the old saying goes, “Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime”. There are many ways to bring forth change in the world, but very few supply the sustainable impact of teaching people to help themselves. The microfinance industry is built on the idea that providing loans, insurance, and training to the world’s poor will improve both economic and social situations, offering a sustainable solution in alleviating global poverty. It has produced many great success stories over the last few decades. This work offers many opportunities for people to assist those who are less fortunate, while gaining hands on work experience at the same time. The financial incidentals, on the other hand, can often be eased by fundraising initiatives. The field of microfinance is providing an essential component in creating jobs and improving the livelihood of people worldwide.
International volunteers like Finland’s Paul Pehkonen, who recently completed a microfinance internship in Kenya, reported a truly fulfilling experience and helped restore financial balance to those struggling in the grip of poverty. Traveling with Cross-Continental Solutions, Paul soon learned that he has chosen the right program. He was very happy with the helpfulness of the local coordinator, the friendliness of the host family, the amount of work responsibility, and the unique cultural immersion experience abroad.
“From the first moment on, the local coordinator was very helpful and understanding. He provided me with good information and insights about the Kenyan culture and people.” Paul continues, “The host family I lived with during my stay was very welcoming and treated me very well at their home. To seriously experience the culture, it is extremely nice to live with a local family. I also spent Christmas, my birthday, and the New Year in Kenya, which was a totally new experience to me.”
The often inaccurate assumption that international internships and volunteer abroad projects are not very effective sometimes deters the people who are needed most. Paul Pehkonen’s experience paints a very different picture.
During my time in Kenya, I had a lot of responsibility in regards to my work. Something I enjoyed very much. I organized a lot of speeches, and provided technical lectures regarding business, accounting, and finance for the local community groups I was working with. Additionally, I was able to initiate a program called ‘One Booklet Project’ with the local coordinator. The purpose of this project is to provide the local microfinance groups and their members knowledge about sustainable business, bookkeeping and budgeting.
The experience was not only productive and valuable for the people of Kenya, it gave Paul a better appreciation for the importance of his work, and volunteering as a whole.
Living abroad in a new culture gives you a lot of perspective, and more importantly, working with the local people who are in need of help is very rewarding. I can sincerely recommend doing a volunteer abroad program with Cross-Continental.
Paul further reports the reasons why he chose Cross-Continental in the first place, “The volunteer programs and internships through Cross-Continental are well organized and are offered at relatively affordable fees. One of the reasons why I chose Cross-Continental is that I have a very busy schedule and they are able to provide very flexible start dates for the programs.” He continues, “I have been very happy with Cross-Continental from the first day onwards. Thanks especially for the quick replies to emails. Everything was organized in a good way overall: the pre-information about Kenya, guides, pick-up from the airport and checking up during the internship.”
Laying the groundwork for change is an essential part of creating any sustainable enterprise. Finding those people with a desire to further the lives of others is necessary to make these changes a reality. Microfinance is an important tool that can help create a world where under-served communities have fair access to economic opportunities. Paul Pehkonen, and volunteers like him, are using the tools they have to spurn others towards the hope to move beyond poverty. Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) December 1, 2007
Building on the Internet’s rapid evolution during the last decade and the media reaching nearly every community around the world today, three high profile entrepreneurs are out to reinvent the way people achieve success and at the same time help a billion people learn to read.
Ideas That Can Change Your Life, the creation of mega-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul author Mark Victor Hansen, Franklin Covey co-founder Roice Krueger and global financial wiz James Skinner debuts on December 1st. Driven by 101 compact books written by the three co-authors in under 100 days, Ideas That Can Change Your Life reveals great knowledge to the world – including insights into wealth, health, love, happiness and relationships. At the core of this new global resource is the intention to distribute over one billion books and end illiteracyincluding business, investment, relationship, and spiritual illiteracy!
“It’s my own heart’s desire to help everyone achieve their bestit’s practically all I talk about these days, “says Mark Victor Hansen. “Our ideas have already helped countless millions of people become their very best. Our clients trust us with their time, their money, and their futures. We deliver–and they continue to beat a path to our doors when they need help!”
These three pioneering businessmen, who have each helped millions of people succeed during their careers, grew wildly excited about providing an entirely new type of center for life wisdom when they first met in Singapore on May 20, 2007. The technology of the Internet and their existing network of friends and business partners around the world is the platform for this new frontier they are developing.
“I believe that we have created a wisdom exchange center,” adds Roice Krueger. “We can now easily pass the wisdom and principles learned by one person to millions of others. The wisdom contained in our on demand library will help many people on a variety of levels.”
In just 97 days, Mark Victor Hansen, Roice Krueger and James Skinner co-authored 101 books for the collection.three days ahead of their audacious, original goal. Every book is easy to read and designed for readers to learn all of the secrets offered on each topic in 15 minutes or less. The average length is 40 pages, which is ideal for today’s fast paced, real time world.
Some of the 101 titles include: Chronic Profitability, How to Make Friends With Anyone, The 9 Laws of the Power of Thought, The 10-Minute Bible, Wealth the Most Unselfish Process, The Successful Family, The Leader in You, Taming the E-Mail Tiger, Starting Poor–Getting Rich, and Instant Learning. Each book gets right to the heart of the matter. The books are written in a way that allows readers to apply the tools immediately in the specific area they’d like to impact.
As the project evolved, the authors learned that today more than one billion people globally are unable to read. Talking with various experts, it became clear that pride of ownership–the ability to own even one book–is a significant factor in overcoming this problem. So the authors decided to do the impossible again–they committed to offer the entire series of 101 books for each purchaser and nine of their friends for just $ 1.00.
“When asked ‘have you lost your minds?’ We simply reply, ‘No, we’re giving them away!’” jokes James Skinner. “I love that people everywhere can lift themselves up and realize their dreams by reading this easily accessible and inexpensive content online. Everything people want to know about having more success, better relationships, more effective and happy lives is all right there. We believe that Ideas That Can Change Your Life will make a massive impact in the worldand that now is just the right time!”
In addition to the 101 books, fans of Ideas That Can Change Your Life may also choose a monthly subscription to Promises, a service that provides more of these related materials to members each month. This additional service is designed to help people achieve breakthroughs in all aspects of their life via teleconference seminars and other web resources.
Months of planning and research now behind them, their first meeting in Singapore proved to be the birth of Ideas That Can Change Your Life, which the founders believe will become the best selling book series in history. Before the central website was even launched, the authors had pre sold two million books, further evidence of the mass appeal of this approach to sharing knowledge and information. Translation has already started into the Japanese language, and discussions are underway for five additional languages, with many more to follow.

All was simple in the last millennium you learn your craft in school , and you are set for life. Not anymore – technology and cultural environments change so fast that a lot of learned rules and conventions of the past are not applicable anymore. It is extremely evident in the motion picture and TV Industries. Film is on the way out, digital cameras and the complex computer generated images replaced a lot of old technologies. New knowledge needs to meet the new requirements of the times .
The famous futurologist Alvin Toffler said: The illiterates of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn. Two schools in Los Angeles — Global Cinematography Institute and Joe Blasco Make-up School — took this as their unofficial motto and are ready to meet challenges of the times.
Expanded Cinematography, is the new discipline at Global Cinematography Institute which unites many traditional and new fields within cinematography. The new school year the most recent session, Course 1, Session 4 starts November 17th has a select few spots remaining for potential students. Potential students should inquire at http://www.globalcinematography.com/apply and email to info(at)globalcinematography(dot)com.
Co-founders of the GCI, Directors of Photography Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC and Yuri Neyman, ASC, along with other teachers introduced Cinematography in Video Games: Virtual LIghting and Previsualization, Cinematography for Small Budget/Indie Films, Foundation of DIT Profession and Visual Storytelling. The Expanded Cinematography classes include Virtual Cinematography, On-Set Image Management, Advanced Lighting for Feature Films, Foundation of Lighting and Composition, Digital Cinematography and 3D Cinematography and Cinematography for Music Videos.
Global Cinematography Institute has students from all over the globe – Brazil, Italy, Ecuador, Finland, Argentina, Mozambique, Norway, Australia, UK, Dubai, Mexico, Croatia, Israel, Poland, Russia, Tunisia and USA. The program is devoted to preparing filmmakers to take advantage of on-going advances in digital and virtual cinematography technologies.
Cinematography is a global language, which uses light and darkness, composition, camera movement, colors, focus, contrast and other elements of visual grammar to bring stories to life, Neyman said. We intend the Institute to provide a forum where new and experienced filmmakers from all sectors of the industry can learn about the Art of Cinematography from the past, present and future, including the evolving art of digital and virtual cameras and lighting.
The founders of Global Cinematography Institute Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC and Yuri Neyman, ASC both migrated to the United States as political refugees. Zsigmond was born and raised in Hungary, graduated from the Film Academy in Budapest and emigrated to the United States in 1957. Zsigmond earned an Oscar® for cinematography on Close Encounters of the Third Kind in 1977 and other Academy Award nominations for The Deer Hunter in 1978, The River in 1984 and The Black Dalhia in 2006. He is one of the founders of the Budapest Cinematography Master Class at his alma mater for film students from around the world since its inception in 2001.
Neyman came to the United States from Moscow, USSR during the early 1980s. Critics lauded his talent for creating modern film noir looks in Liquid Sky, DOA, Fatal Deception: Mrs. Lee Harvey Oswald, Scattered Dreams and many others studio and independent films. New York had never been photographed better in a movie, a Wall Street Journal critic wrote about his work. Rarely, if ever had Manhattan been viewed so intensely, “A spectacular work of moving art, The most beautiful science-fiction movie ever made, Stunning camera work, High concept movie which crackles with imagination and technique, Yuri Neyman does extraordinary inventive and witty work., …Gargoyle image is stunningly caught by cinematographer Yuri Neyman in an abstract flourish images unusual for TV movies. – wrote other critics.
Besides compiling an array of narrative film and commercial credits, Neyman has invented technologies designed to help cinematographers control the quality of images. He also developed the History of Cinematography program, which he taught at the American Film Institute. Neyman has also conducted seminars about color correction and digital technology at various film schools.
Technological revolution and innovations in cameras and lights changed a lot also in the make up industry. Joe Blasco, the founder of Make-up School in Florida and Los Angeles is credited with the creation of the most comprehensive series of encyclopedic textbooks for professional make-up artistry. The most known series, entitled The Professional Make-up Artist is comprised of three volumes.
At an early age, Joe Blasco was told that schools for professional motion-picture and television make-up simply did not exist; he therefore decided to remedy the situation by developing the worlds first governmentally approved schools for professional make-up artistry, thereby opening doors to make-up artists worldwide. The Joe Blasco Schools are responsible for introducing more award-winning make-up artists than any other artist apprenticeship program or training program in the history of the profession.
Although once considered an industry reserved for menparticularly for male members of the make-up familiesprofessional make-up became more accepting of women in large part through the efforts of Joe Blasco, whose schools openly welcomed them, helping to pave the way for them to enter the field. Today there are now more female artists in all areas of the arta first in the history of the profession.
Joe Blasco has devised the first truly professional online make-up artist and hairstylist training program. In response to the dramatic technological changes in the motion-picture and television industrieswith an awareness that the teaching methods of the past have now become obsoletehe has developed a new, state-of-the-art teaching method for students of professional make-up, a method that allows students of the craft to experience the highest quality make-up education in the comfort of their own homes, without incurring the expense of travel and lodging.
To quote Ve Neill, 5-time Academy Award-winning artist: Joe Blasco is the only make-up artist whom I know who constantly and completely reinvents himself every three to five years!
Joe Blasco is always thinking outside the boxinventing, refining, and creating new arenas within the all-encompassing realm of professional make-up artistry and his school is always on the forefront of new developments. Students are experiencing not only the wealth of knowledge from the past, but they are very much enjoying to re-learn the foundation of their profession, new technologies, new methods of work.
Joe Blascos Make-up School achievements and pioneering efforts in all areas of make-up artistry truly set the school apart as the icon and the sample for the whole industry. Graduates of the school are working in all areas of make up art — from beauty to the beast, and in every area of the art. Joe Blaco has successfully experienced and mastered areas of make-up artistry far beyond application. But most importantly, he shares his knowledge with everyone and continues to create new platforms from which professional make-up can evolve to even greater heights.
The offspring of Joe Blascos Make-up School MUATV network com offers everything you have always wanted to know about makeup but were afraid to ask. For example, interviews with Oscar and Emmy award winning makeup artists and hairstylists. Thousands of professional secrets, techniques, products, special events, and makeup fashion news will be part of the MUATV.com

Why We Care: Global Leaders Council for Reproductive Health, an unprecedented collection of personal stories, unveiled today at the London Summit on Family Planning, highlights a prestigious group of global leaders who share their intense support for reproductive health an issue that transcends geography and generations. Aspen Global Health and Development and the UN Foundation announced the publication of the book, which was presented as a gift to all Summit attendees. A website devoted to the current essays was also unveiled, with plans to continue to collect essays by high-profile international figures on the importance of reproductive health from their perspectives.
The trailblazing book is part of the global dialogue taking place around the London Summit on Family Planning. This gathering, led by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the United Kingdoms Department for International Development, together with UNFPA and other partners, brings together more than 200 high-level representatives of governments, multilateral agencies and foundations from around the world for an unprecedented meeting to tackle the pressing, unmet need for family planning.
Why We Care provides a platform through which Global Leaders on Reproductive Health will focus international attention on the worlds hardest to reach women, who want access to voluntary contraception to build on the momentum set by the London Summits goals and commitments.
With a Foreword by Musimbi Kanyoro and Afterword by Peggy Clark, Why We Care includes personal essays by Joyce Banda, Regina Benjamin, Gro Harlem Brundtland, Helen Clark, Jan Eliasson, Tarja Halonen, Annie Lennox, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Maria Otero, Joy Phumaphi, Mary Robinson, Fred Sai, Jenny Shipley, Ted Turner and Vaira Vike-Freiberga.
Accompanying photographs of these global leaders by Dominic Chavez capture the passion of these men and women in a unique collection of portraits.
This collection of personal essays vividly depicts the intense connection and passion each has for this cause, said Peggy Clark, Executive Director of Aspen Global Health and Development. Far from a dry collection of facts and figures, Why We Care brings the issue of reproductive health central to so many other development issues to an intimate, storytelling level, Clark added. These leaders share why they are personally interested in this issue. What moment in time or event lit the spark of change in them, when did they wake up to the importance of this issue?
Nothing is more personal than the decisions about a persons body, a persons health, or the shape and size of a family, said Kathy Calvin, UN Foundation CEO. Reproductive health is at the center of these decisions, but for millions of women it is still something that is out of reach. Global leaders understand this connection, and their personal stories are proof that this is an issue that matters to them at a deep, personal level. While they work to put reproductive health on the global agenda as policymakers, this book proves why it matters to them as mothers, daughters, fathers, sons, sisters and brothers, Calvin added.
To view an online preview of the book, and to read the stories of why these global leaders support access to voluntary family planning, please visit http://www.UNFoundation.org/WhyWeCare.

Furthering its commitment to eco-conscious education, Otis College of Art and Design partnered with German toymaker Hape to create an international think tank and integrated learning experience.
Otis faculty members and students joined Hape employees and members of the China Academy of the Arts to study the complexities of sustainable business practice and associated manufacturing challenges while developing new product designs that will move into formal production at Hape in the coming year.
The group traveled to China for a 29-day journey through the bamboo forests of Zhejiang Province, to the city of Hangzhou and the Ningbo-Zhoushan Harbor, one of the largest ports in the world. There they observed and exchanged ideas with local craftspeople, manufacturers, educators and students from distinguished design schools such as Bauhaus University, Weimar, Shenkar College of Art and Design, Israel, and KaosPilot, Denmark.
The international team participated with Hape step-by-step in research, development, idea generation, production, and testing of new products. Students learned firsthand what it takes to bring sustainable products to market.
This kind of collaboration is invaluable for industry and academia, said Otis Toy Design Professor Drew Plakos. Its real-world learning for next-generation designers and smart R&D for industry leaders.
Experimenting with sustainable materials and renewable resources such as bamboo and soy-based pigment, the student designers produced a number of projects from role-play toddler games and construction sets, to nested drums for a new Hape instrument line. Several of their final designs were chosen for formal development.
DESIGNING FOR SUSTAINABILITY IS DESIGNING FOR THE FUTURE
Both Otis and Hape work to develop strategies and systems that meet the needs of current generations without compromising those of future generations. The theme of sustainable design is woven into the curricula of all academic disciplines at Otis. A Minor in Sustainability is available to all undergraduate majors, providing students with a broad understanding of social, political, economic, and environmental issues, and teaching them how their work impacts society and the environment. As a leading multinational manufacturer, Hape strategically considers surface treatment, energy consumption, and packaging options to minimize environmental impact and maximize efficiency; materials, production, by-products, waste, shipping, and transport are all factors.
