Many photographs of a single genre grouped together as a collection are known as photography galleries. It is also often termed as simply a photo gallery. A gallery usually works as a group of photographs which are similar in context, are of the same model such as a person or a product, revolving around a common subject or theme, or just relevant to each other in some unique way.

The concept of photo galleries today has a very commercial connotation with increase of media base around the world, particularly the web space.

Photography galleries online are a great source of photographic content for the thousands of viewers from all over the world. Just typing ‘photo gallery’ with another keyword of any subject of your interest in your search engine produces search results all related to that keyword. There would a number of photo galleries open for viewing on various web sites. For instance, if you type the name of your favourite band, and say they are considerably widely-known, and search for their photo gallery, you are sure to find scores of their photographs. Now these photographs are sorted out in groups or classified rather, based on the context.

A gallery could be classified according to the date the pictures were taken primarily, and then the location, or their association with any particular event.

The commercial application of photography is in diverse forms and fields. Be it corporate photography or photojournalism, wildlife photography or wedding photography, there is a great demand for expert photography services. In corporate photography, product photography is a major component, and there are many photography galleries generated for these products. Also in photojournalism, many events are photographically covered and galleries are generated hence. In wildlife, travel and fashion photography, galleries are generated based on different models, different seasons or different locations. In photography of functions or events, the scale being either big or small, personal galleries are generated by grouping all the photographs clicked at the time and place of the event.

These days, a lot of web portals feature photography galleries of photos shot by amateurs and so do a lot of magazines. You can find these all over the internet. There are online communities for aspiring photographers where they can upload their photo galleries for viewers to see. There are a number of project related galleries too.

A lot of professional photographers, including those who work for photography studios, have online profiles nowadays. They have their portfolios which feature their work through photography galleries. As a consumer of photography services, one must make sure one goes through these galleries before hiring them for events. The concept of hard copy photo galleries is different from online photo galleries in that the latter have made it very easy and convenient for photographers as well as consumers. Especially with the entry of digital photography today, services and access have both become extremely smooth. And the generation and preservation of photo galleries becomes much more flexible and efficient because of the same.
