Heather Tomkins, a Web Design and New Media graduate student at Academy of Art University, will be spending the summer working at Klout, the San Francisco tech company that measures the influence of social media users, thanks to the Kleiner Perkins Design Fellows Program. Tomkins is one of twelve design students from around the country to receive a fellowship from Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, the venture capital firm that launched the Design Fellows Program to provide the most promising design students with mentorship, leadership and community and to nurture the interconnection of design and technology in developing innovative products and services. The program connects design students from the top universities in the country with some of the most design-influenced companies in the firm’s portfolio.
As part of the application process, Tomkins submitted her Academy thesis project, an interactive childrens book for the iPad called The Bear and the Picture Camera. She designed the book in a way that allows the reader and the main character to explore and draw together a type of combination she felt was missing in the iPad childrens book market.
Not only did this project allow me to develop new skills in user experience and user interface design, it allowed me to further develop my skills as an illustrator, visual designer and storyteller, she said. Im honored and excited to be a 2013 KPCB Design Fellow. I look forward to my summer with Klout and this invaluable opportunity to grow as a designer.
Academy President Elisa Stephens explains how the universitys teaching strategy helps make accomplishments like Tompkins possible: One thing every Academy student must do in order to graduate is complete a portfolio of work that shows potential employers that the student has not only studied design, but has hands-on experience and can contribute to a company. Heather clearly knocked the ball out of the park with her thesis project, and we are excited that she will be able to further develop her skills this summer at Klout.
The Design Fellows Program is part of KPCBs strategy for supporting innovative companies. In establishing it, says Juliet de Baubigny, a partner at KPCB who helped build the program, What we wanted to do was to really support the field; we wanted to make sure that we helped our companies gain access to the best designers, and we wanted to continue, ourselves, to learn as the field of design innovation unfolds. I feel that design is going to be the key differentiator with many entrepreneurial ventures going forward.
Since its founding in 1972, KPCB has backed entrepreneurs in more than 500 ventures including AOL, Amazon, Citrix, Compaq, Electronic Arts, Genentech, Google, Intuit, Juniper Networks, Netscape, Sun, Symantec, Verisign and Zynga. The program aims to help bright students gain the experience and relationships they need to create meaningful careers at technology companies after graduation, and KPCBs portfolio companies benefit by tapping into the next generation of design thinking and talent.

It has been over eleven years since Nicolás P. Villarreal graduated with honors from Academy of Art University and launched his career in animation, but it has been well worth the wait to experience one of the most prestigious honors a filmmaker could ever hope for: a trip to the Cannes Film Festival. Villarreal, who in addition to running Red Clover Studios, is the Director of the Academy of Art Universitys School of Visual Development, and is heading to France, where his short film, Pasteurized, will be available to thousands of Cannes Film Festival goers from around the world. Ironically, it was Villarreals 1999 trip to Paris, where he visited Museum of Sciences in “Le Parc de la Villete” that sparked the idea for his film about a scientist who receives an unexpected visitor while conducting experiments in the middle of the night. To view the trailer, visit: http://pasteurizedthefilm.com
Villarreal, who is a full-time faculty member in the animation department, said This is an absolutely incredible honor and I am particularly excited about sharing it with my students and the Academy of Art University community. Animation is the ultimate platform to display ones creativity, and I get a lot of joy out of helping students achieve that. It is very special for me to share this honor with them so that they can see first-hand that their dreams will come true if they work hard.
Prior to joining the Academy of Art University, Villarreal, who was born and raised in La Plata, Argentina, worked as a traditional animator, character designer, sculptor and Visual Development artist for films and video games including Walt Disney Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment, Jim Henson Studios, Sega, DigitalDomain and Amazon Studios among others.
Academy of Art University President Dr. Elisa Stephens said, We are extremely proud of Nicolás and wish him the very best at Cannes. Our mission at the Academy of Art University is to prepare students for the art and design jobs of todays global economy, and we are able to do that because of our talented instructors like Nicolás, who are professionals in their fields and passionate about sharing their creative talents and experiences with the next generation.
Pasteurized is a 7-minute, 33-second short animated film about an alien cow who manufactures milk in space. Villarreal spent over 27 months working on the piece with a small team of sound, animation and editing experts, including editor, producer, and Academy of Art University faculty member Alessandro Squitti, and another Academy of Art University animation alumna and faculty member, Sherrie H. Sinclair, who joined the Academy after a nine-year career at Disney.
Villarreal added, When I was in school at the Academy, I had an animation teacher who would fly up from Disney to teach us and he used to share his personal work with our class, which was incredibly inspiring. Now today, I am trying to do the same thing for my students. The industry is extremely competitive, but now students have real-life proof that they can make it with hard-work, persistence and patience.
Villarreals film will be featured in a digital library at the Short Film Corner with other leading films. Organized by the Festival de Cannes, the Short Film Corner presents selected short films in its Digital Film Library on site at Cannes and after the Festival on shortfilmcorner.com, where private access is exclusively reserved to short film buyers and film festival programmers.

Academy of Art University President Elisa Stephens was among those honored last week at Standing Ovations VI (http://www.sfstandingovations.com), a celebration of San Francisco style sponsored by the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society.
The evening gala, held at Mint Plaza, also featured a show of fashion designs by Academy School of Fashion students and alumni.
Each year, Standing Ovations celebrates the historic achievements of those who have contributed to San Franciscos cultural heritage. Historic Contributions Awards are made for, in the Museum and Historical Societys words, the people that bring fashion to the people of San Francisco. A Rising Star Award is also granted to an emerging talent from the world of fashion design or retail. This years event was conducted at the citys Old Mint, the future site of the San Francisco Museum at the Mint.
In addition to the Stephens family, others awarded on April 18 were Wilkes Bashford, Levi Strauss & Co., Macys, the Sockolov Family and Sara Shepherd, a 2005 BFA graduate of the Academy of Art Universitys School of Fashion who received the Rising Star Award in recognition of her successful fashion career. An exhibition in the Old Mint titled San Francisco Style, showcasing the styles and fashions of San Francisco throughout history, debuted on the evening of the event and opened to the public April 20.
The San Francisco Museum and Historical Society is the focal point for discovering the history of the Bay Area, including the creation and ongoing operation of a world class museum in San Francisco’s Old Mint. This National Historic Landmark at Fifth and Mission Streets will be transformed into the San Francisco Museum at the Mint where visitors can experience the stories that shaped San Francisco through state-of-the-art interactive exhibits. The museum will also contain exhibits on American money and the Gold Rush and provide a rich educational experience. The project has entered its second phase, a $ 60 million campaign to complete design and construction.

San Francisco, California (PRWEB) December 04, 2012
The Academy of Art University released its 2012 economic impact report today, which finds that the University is providing an economic and fiscal boost to the local and regional economy at a time when the rest of the region has struggled. With over 18,000 students, the Academy is the largest private school of art and design in the country and the fourth largest university overall in the Bay Area. In 2011, the Academy generated an annual regional economic impact of approximately $ 369 million in San Francisco and $ 579 million the Bay Area, up from $ 290 million and $ 500 million respectively in 2009.
The Academys market-based curriculum prepares students for the art and design jobs that are fueling the Bay Areas innovation economy. Although the recent economic environment has been challenging, and opportunities have been more difficult to find, Academy graduates have continued to successfully compete for jobs. Preliminary, unofficial research conducted by the Academy shows that approximately 80% of Academy graduates gained employment in their field of study in 2011.
Elisa Stephens, President of the Academy of Art University stated, The Bay Area is home to some of the worlds most innovative companies and the Academy takes great pride in the fact that we are preparing the workforce these companies need to grow. Each semester, our dedicated instructors who are all professionals in their field are preparing students with the skills and experiences they need to get jobs and contribute on day one. The success of the Academy is a reflection of the success our students are having at getting jobs in their field of study and the end result is a win for all involved — the Bay Area, the business community and Academy of Art University students.
The report, prepared by Capitol Public Finance Group, LLC, focused on two areas of economic impact the Academys record on fueling the Bay Areas innovation economy by educating a skilled creative workforce; and the financial impact of the Academys presence in the Bay Area.
The key economic findings include:
–Including multiplier effects, Academy of Art University student spending generates an impact on the San Francisco economy of approximately $ 170 million, and $ 316 million on the regional economy.
–Jobs generated from student spending equate to approximately 1,001 in the City and approximately 1,439 in the nine-county Bay Area.
–Academy of Art University added 294 positions from 2007 to 2011, an increase of 14.2%, during a time when employment in the Bay Area increased by 0.4%.
–The Academy made operational expenditures of approximately $ 114 million in the City and $ 136 million in the nine-county Bay Area. As this spending circulates through the economy, it generates $ 40 million in additional indirect spending in the City and $ 45 million in additional induced spending in the City for a total of $ 199 million in the local economy. Furthermore, the $ 136 million in regional Bay Area spending results in a total of $ 263 million in economic impacts on the nine-county Bay Area.
Additional Findings Related to Preparing Students for the Workforce include:
–The Academys 2009 cohort default rate (11%) outperformed the rate for all schools (13.4%) and all proprietary schools (22.8%), with a default rate of well below half of the overall rate.
–Although the recent economic environment has been challenging, and opportunities have been more difficult to find, Academy graduates have continued to successfully compete for jobs. Preliminary, unofficial research conducted by the Academy shows that approximately 80% of Academy graduates gained employment in their field of study.
–Tuition and overall costs for students at Academy are well below the level of comparable private art institutions, with tuition 43% below the cost of other institutions and overall costs 28% lower.
President Stephens added, A students ability to repay their loan – and thus, provide a strong return on investment — relies on obtaining a job upon graduation, and that is what is happening at the Academy of Art University.
The Academy is an output based higher education model that provides an inclusive admissions policy to all students, but imposes both a rigorous curriculum and foundations program that requires the students — taught by professional instructors who are successful in their careers – to produce an actual portfolio of products that demonstrate their mastery, and rewards them by providing a degree that gives them the opportunity to develop successful careers.

San Francisco, California (PRWEB) October 16, 2012
Academy of Art University and Aurasma, the worlds leading augmented reality platform, unveiled a groundbreaking digital, interactive catalogue for prospective students that brings the Academys industry-leading art and design programs to life. The Universitys new catalogue, Intersections, is a traditional book featuring all 19 fields of study at the Academy of Art, but with a new interactive feature powered by Aurasma an augmented reality technology that allows users to point their iPad, iPhone or Android device at their book to watch the images on the page come to life. Academy of Art University is the first art school to use the technology, and the Universitys wide-scale distribution of the book is the largest college effort to date with more than 500,000 copies being shipped to prospective students.
The Academy of Art University has so much to offer students who want to pursue careers in creative fields, and we wanted to identify an innovative platform that would allow us to connect with prospective students and show them exactly how our curriculum can help them to be successful in the workforce, said Dr. Elisa Stephens, President of Academy of Art University. Aurasmas technology allows students to see the quality of work being produced on campus in an interactive way and it allows us to constantly update the images and information in real-time as we add new courses and offerings. This is marketing in the 21st century and we are proud to be the first art University to take advantage of Aurasmas industry-leading technology.
Aurasma uses advanced image and pattern recognition to recognize and understand real-world images and objects. It then seamlessly blends the realworld with rich, interactive content such as videos and animations called auras. The Academy of Art University’s Intersections book features 50 auras that users can point their smart device at, which connects them to video/audio and websites with more information about the particular field of study. The image introducing every department features an aura that takes users to a short video introducing that specific department.
The Academy of Art University is a perfect partner for our augmented reality technology, said Jennifer Rapp, general manager at Aurasma. We are excited about partnering with the Academy of Art University to be on the cutting edge of marketing to students in todays digital society, and believe this is exactly the kind of innovation that students today will connect with as they make the all-important decision of where to get their education.
Composition4, an edgy, new San Francisco hybrid advertising agency coordinated with Aurasma to create this project on behalf of the Academy of Art University. The company is run by Academy of Art University alumni Zach Morvant and Andrew Wright and co-director of the University’s advertising department Vince Engel.
About the Academy of Art University

The Academys hands-on curriculum produces graduates that possess great artistic and design skills — and equally as important, the ability to put those talents to work immediately after graduation. As a result, Academy graduates are ready to compete for and win the jobs of the 21st Century in 19 fields: Acting, Advertising, Animation & Visual Effects, Architecture, Art Education, Art History, Fashion, Fine Art, Game Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, Industrial Design, Interior Architecture & Design, Landscape Architecture, Motion Pictures & Television, Multimedia Communications, Music Production & Sound Design for Visual Media, Photography and Web Design & New Media.
